AWARD WINNING AUTO GLASS SHOP IN EDMOND, OK
VETERAN OWNED & OPERATED
Dealing with a crack in your windshield can be very stressful, especially when you hear the unsettling sound of a rock hitting your glass while driving on the highway. Like many other annoying things in life, windshield damage can occur unexpectedly. Getting your windshield repaired or replaced is not only important for safety, but it’s also required by law.
Since you found your way to our blog, there are two things safe to assume. You live in Oklahoma and you have a damaged windshield. Before you head out to get your windshield repaired or replaced, you want to know if your insurance company will cover the cost. This is a fair question and yes, we have an answer.
That depends on what type of insurance you have. Below are the types of insurance available and what they cover.
This type of insurance was once called “full coverage.” What that means is your entire vehicle is covered by the policy as well as other vehicles involved. There’s much more to it than that, but that’s a generalization that applies.
If you have comprehensive insurance for your vehicle and live in Oklahoma, your policy likely covers windshield damage. But you will have to meet the deductible.
This type of insurance is low-cost because it doesn’t cover much. It only covers damage to other people’s vehicles due to an accident. But your vehicle is not covered so it’s unlikely the insurance company will pay for your new windshield if you have liability insurance.
If you have comprehensive insurance you will likely have to meet your deductible before the insurance company will pay for your windshield. But maybe you had work done already and your deductible is met, or your deductible is less than the cost of the windshield, which is common.
In some cases, a damaged windshield can be repaired, as long as the rock chip is smaller than a quarter in diameter or the crack is shorter than a dollar bill. However, if the damage in your windshield is extensive, a windshield replacement might be the safest option. An auto glass technician can guide you to whether your windshield would benefit from a repair or a replacement.
If your vehicle has Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) then yes, your new windshield will need to be calibrated to work with your vehicle’s technology. But don’t be too concerned. It doesn’t take very long and if you want your safety systems to work, ADAS calibration can’t be skipped.
