5 Reasons Why Your Windshield Wipers Are Streaking

Optic-Kleer • April 23, 2025

Common Causes of Streaking Windshield Wipers

Streaking windshields are much more than just an annoyance—they’re downright dangerous. When you're driving and the elements are crashing onto your windshield, your wipers need to keep up the pace and clear the glass so you can see the road ahead. If your windshield wipers are streaking, here are some possible reasons why.

1. Damaged or Worn Blades

Wiper blades are the rubber or silicone parts that make contact with the glass. They should glide seamlessly across your windshield, but damaged blades disrupt that. Many factors can wear down the blades, including extremely hot or cold temperatures, ice, sunlight, moisture, and road debris. Additionally, the rubber naturally deteriorates over time, causing the blades to break down.

2. Windshield Dirt

If you let dirt and grime build up on your windshield, the wipers will have a tough time keeping it clean. Dirt leads to streaking, which is dangerous. It’s a good idea to clean both your windshield and wipers at least once a month using a cleaning solution and microfiber cloth.

3. Arm Issues

The wiper arm is the part that connects the blades to the motor. When the arm becomes weak or rusty, or when the springs deteriorate, it can affect performance. A weakened arm doesn’t apply the proper amount of pressure to the blades, leading to incomplete contact with the windshield and streaking.

4. Imperfections in the Windshield

Chips or small cracks in your windshield can prevent the wipers from clearing the glass properly, resulting in streaks. These imperfections can also spread quickly, becoming a bigger safety concern. If you notice cracks or chips, contact a reputable auto glass company immediately—even if they seem small. Time is of the essence.

5. Cheaply Made Blades

Some items are worth investing in, and windshield wipers are one of them. Cheaper wipers are often poorly made, leading to problems like streaking. High-quality wipers are specifically designed to fit the contours of your windshield and provide better performance.

Should I Replace My Wipers Often?

It’s recommended to replace your wipers every six to twelve months. Since blades deteriorate naturally, it’s good to replace them before they crack, split, or harden. If you notice signs of wear, such as chattering, jumping, or streaking, even before the six-month mark, it’s time to replace them. Your safety depends on it.

Signs of Worn Wipers

There are several ways your wipers will tell you they need to be replaced. One sign is poor visibility—if your wipers are streaking or smearing instead of clearing the glass, they may be worn. Another sign is chattering or skipping—if your wipers are no longer gliding smoothly across the windshield, it's time to have them checked.

The Dangers of Driving with Worn Wipers

Driving in storms can be dangerous, especially when your visibility is compromised. If your wipers aren’t working well, you risk not seeing clearly in bad weather, which could lead to accidents. Prioritize your safety by ensuring your wipers are in good working condition.
